To Thomas Hardy

In thick darkness you sought light, efforts tried hard in vain.
Others had their salvation:
Wealth, health, family or fame;
Remain you in the hollow darkness,
Silent howls scattered and sank.

Reading your lines I wept and sighed,
Delighted to see the other side of a mirror,
And downcast for the forlorn life you had fulfilled,
that I should alone stroll hereafter.
